10 Films You Should Have Watched Last 2017

All of these films were nationally released in the Philippines in 2017. Here are my top 10 picks of the films you have to watch from 2017. Take that popcorn, grab that seat and watch these movies:

Coco

Coco unravels the balance between the essence of family and the pursuit of someone’s dreams. This film is so wonderfully made, and I like how detailed it is. There was a heartfelt scene that was simply so truthful that will touch your heart.

It

Nothing cuter and thrilling than having a group of children battling a force of evil in this horror film. Each story of the characters was able to give a unique sense of fear. If you loved Stranger Things, you will enjoy this as well.

Kita Kita

Kita Kita (I See You) was a story of the not-so-handsome guy courting the blind girl who seemed lost all hopes for life. What I liked about this film is that it’s like watching a cute Japanese anime with background music every now and then. Also, I was surprised with the theme song of the movie as it was revived wonderfully.

A Monster Calls

The film depicts the life journey of a kid taking the courage to face the adversities in life. It also tells other stories needed by the child to have certain realizations. I liked the mini-stories within this film as it makes you think about life differently.

Last Night

For a movie being targeted to mainstream Filipinos, this was brave enough to show a different kind of love story that also tackles how a suicidal person thinks. Why am I even watching this? I thought I would be disappointed but I didn’t. I liked the uniqueness of this story.

Patay na si Hesus

I loved the insertion of random funny things within the story of Patay na si Hesus (Jesus is dead). As a Filipino, you can relate to this traveling family because you see yourself as the mother, or as the children. Non-stop laughter, I was laughing again before I even finished laughing.

Wonder Woman

Gone were the days that an alpha male is needed in order to make a successful hero movie. Wonder Woman is the female hero made perfectly right. They also minimized the notion that having a female character needs to attract the audience sensually.

Bad Genius

With great power comes great responsibility says Spider-Man. And that is definitely true with great intelligence. Any strength you have, you can use it in good or bad thing. How do you think will this movie end?

Deadma Walking

Deadma Walking tackles the story of a dying gay person who wants to attend to his own funeral. The performances on the stage by the gay theatre actor was also brilliant. It was funny and emotional film combined.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Some family reunions are a bit odd. This movie will redefine your concept of family. More adventure and more fun, the movie is funny, sad, action-packed all at the same time. This is one of the awesome Marvel movies out there.

Favorite Lines From Everything About Her

Nowadays, it’s rare to find a Filipino film with a right mix of comedy and drama, brilliant script, heartfelt dialogues, sincere acting, and a catchy song. I was surprised how this film became one of my favorite best Pinoy films following the likes of Heneral Luna and OTJ, maybe because it’s that good in every aspect. It was sincere but not boring. It was a tearjerker but not heavy drama. It was delivering a comedy relief, yet you can not find it cheap.

Everything About Her

Here are my 10 favorite lines or dialogues from that movie:

Jaica: I want to go abroad. I have great dreams. Kahit ano ibibigay ko, kahit ano kahit virginity ko.

Albert: Virgin ka pa?

Jaica: Psst! Secret lang natin yun.

Jaica: Si Nanay ba nakauwi na?

Jaica’s Dad: Sino ba ang tinutukoy mo? Yung aso o yung nanay mo? (Dog’s name is also Nanay)

20 Hugot Lines From That Thing Called Tadhana

The movie literally takes us to the journey of two strangers at an Italy airport. Anthony joined Mace as she finds herself into recovering from an eight-year broken relationship. They traveled together at beautiful places in the Philippines such as Baguio and Sagada, and shared to each other what they’ve learned and still learning from love. How Sagada was captured in the early morning by the camera was breathtaking as well! Not to mention how the short story, “The Arrow With the Heart Pierced Through It” was also well-written.

What moviegoers will like about this film is its simplicity, its genuineness to give its audience a picture of what a person experiences from mending a broken heart without the needed grand gestures of sweet moments, that seems impossible to happen in reality. And If you’re looking for the famous lines in the movie. Well, you’re in the right place, as I give you not just 10, but my top 20 “hugot” (meaningful) lines from That Thing Called Tadhana (Destiny):

Destiny

M: “Makakarecover pa kaya ako?”

A: “Makakarecover ka. Kasi yung ganyan kalaking pagmamahal, ganyan ka-overwhelming, imposibleng walang papuntahan yan e. Babalik yan sayo. Not necessarily sa taong pinagbigyan mo, pero sigurado ako, mababalik yan sayo.”

A: “Sabi nga ni Scott Fitzgerald, ‘There are all kinds of love in this world, but never the same love twice.'”

M: “Kung mahal mo, ipaglaban mo. Gawin mo lahat para bumalik siya sayo. Wag kang mag-antay na may magtulak sa kanya pabalik sayo. Hatakin mo. Wag kang bibitaw.”

M: “Yan talagang Italy na yan. Wag yan makapunta-punta sa kanto namin. Ipapabugbog ko yan.”

A: “Dahon ng malunggay?”

M: “Paborito niya yung malunggay pandesal sa Project 8.”

A: “Wow.

M: “Pano ba makalimot?”

A: “Pwede ka uminom gabi-gabi. Makipag-date kung kani-kanino…. Or pwede kang makahanap ng new love.”

A: “Kapag may dumaan na shooting star, ano iwiwish mo?”

Pakisabi thank you.

A: “Sige.

A: “Oo naman.”

A: “Bakit? Kapag sinabi niya, may magbabago ba?

Yung 8 years namin, ginawa niyang tapusin sa 7 words.”

A: “The heart asked, ‘Are you the arrow with the heart pierced through it?” Then, the arrow and the heart just smiled. They don’t need to say any.”

M: “Gano katagal bago mo siya nakalimutan?”

A: “Di na importante yun. Ang mahalaga, nakalimutan.”
